LiDAR: Powering the Next Generation of Robotic Vision

A LiDAR sensor is far more than another imaging tool—it’s a transformative technology enabling robots to perceive and navigate the world with precision. By using laser light instead of relying on ambient conditions, LiDAR provides highly accurate maps of the environment, even in total darkness or poor visibility. The Optical Heart of LiDAR

LiDAR systems rely on a set of optical components that work in concert to measure distance and map environments:

  2. Beam Steering Unit – Directs the laser pulses across the desired scanning field, either through rotating mirrors, micro-mirrors, or phased arrays.

  5. Signal Processing Electronics – Interprets the detected signals, calculating distances and generating accurate spatial maps.

Emerging LiDAR Technologies

New LiDAR designs are reducing reliance on bulky mechanical systems. Flash LiDAR uses bursts of light captured by detector arrays, MEMs LiDAR employs tiny mirrors for wide-area scanning without rotation, and Optical Phase Array LiDAR leverages beam sequencing for fine-grained control.
