As optical systems are pushed to be better, faster, and cheaper, it becomes necessary to explore aspheric solutions. Aspherical elements eliminate monochromatic aberrations (e.g. spherical aberration) and improve focusing and collimating accuracy. They replace a multiple spherical element assembly, thereby combining weight reduction and a more compact design. Thus the number of back reflections is reduced, and a higher transmission is achieved. Shanghai Optics has identified several glasses that are suitable for precision molding and polishing, BK-7, B270, Pyrex, Borosilicate, F2 etc.
